University students demand better budget for President Rodrigo Chaves, after fulfilling 100 days in office

The march of thousands of people demonstrating to oppose the cut of ¢129 billion from the Special Fund for Higher Education

Costa Rica – Thousands of university students demonstrated peacefully on Tuesday to protest against possible budget cuts, while the government announced, after a meeting with the rectors, that desists in its intention to reduce the budget of public universities by a 23%.

The march of thousands of people demonstrating to oppose the cut of ¢129 billion from the Special Fund for Higher Education (FEES), promoted by the government of President Rodrigo Chaves, arrived at the Presidential House in Zapote.

This Tuesday's march was the first demonstration against the Government of Rodrigo Chaves, who is birthday today 100 days in office.

“We are here to show that we have a voice and that we are not going to allow them to damage our future with cuts to the FEES. We do not want our scholarships to be taken away or for education to be seen as a commodity”, student Karla Sandoval told the press.
