After two weeks of protests, Ricardo Roselló resigned as governor of Puerto Rico on Wednesday night. The resignation will be effective 2 of August.
In this way, Governor confirmed the news that some media already assumed safe since yesterday.
In a video, in which he tried to make a defense of his management, he stated: “with detachment I announce that I will be giving up the post of governor, which will be effective on Friday 2 August 2019”.
He noted that in the coming days will be addressing outstanding issues that make viable an orderly transition.
The protests came after they were made public "chats" between the governor and cabinet members, including homophobic comments, machista, and insults and jokes about the dead by Hurricane Maria 2017. Filtration of this information led to the institutional crisis.
At the time when the resignation was announced, Puerto Ricans took to the streets of San Juan to celebrate the decision.
