Panama – Authorities from Panama and Colombia dismantled a criminal gang linked to FARC dissident groups that used the Panamanian Pacific coast to move shipments to Central and North America, after which they were arrested 20 people in both countries, According to the official report.
The binational operation “Pólux” began in 2019 after a complaint about the activity of the group made up of Panamanians and foreigners who collaborated so that drug traffickers evaded security controls to transfer the drug through semi-submersibles with a capacity of up to 2.5 tons that made stops in Panama and Costa Rica.
"These organizations produce drugs in Colombia related to the clan of the Gulf, they were dedicated to transferring and shipping, often using our coasts", assured in a press conference the director of the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN), Jeremiah Uriah.
As a result of the operation that lasted more than 2 years, were detained 20 people, between those 12 apprehended in Colombia, including the leader of the organization, The Public Ministry said in a previous statement.
The Panamanian authorities did not detail the total number of seizures made during the investigation., but in Colombia it was reported that they began the process of extinction of the right of ownership of 11 estate, five commercial establishments, nine vehicles, a boat, Y 10 bank accounts, said the Attorney General of the Nation, Javier Caraballo.
“…this criminal group in Colombia obeyed a FARC dissident group, specifically the Front 30, very powerful in Colombia that was somehow establishing its tentacles in Panama, but with this operation we have managed to demobilize this group…”, Caraballo added.
In the first four months of 2022, authorities reported the seizure of more than 45 tons of drugs and the capture of 165 people linked to drug trafficking nationwide, with a higher incidence in the Atlantic province of Colón where a large number of containers infected with drugs have been detected, stated in previous days the Ministry of Security. In 2021 Panama seized a record number of more than 128 tons of drug, added the report.
