Panama seizes some 81 tons of drugs in operations in 2020

Panamanian authorities seized some 81 tons of drugs, mostly cocaine and 7.7 millions of dollars during anti-narcotics operations carried out in different parts of the country in 2020, according to the Ministry of Security.

After 463 operations, the security forces also seized the drug, 853 vehicles, 134 boats, Y $7.7 millions, they also apprehended 552 people linked to these illegal actions, according to the statement.

The authorities attributed much of the success of the strategy to intelligence work and the exchange of information between countries.

The Minister of Security, Juan Pino said that coordinated coordination with the countries of the region, especially with Colombia it allows the seizure of large quantities of drugs and reduces the movement through the jungles of Darién, located on the border shared by both nations.

As part of the strategy to stop drug trafficking, Panama strengthened surveillance in the territory with special emphasis on the borders and maritime zones because drug traffickers take advantage of the inhospitable condition of the mountainous area of ​​Darién to introduce drugs through "backpackers.".

"The permanent surveillance of Senafront units (border police) has caused the so-called backpackers, that are used by drug traffickers to move and introduce drugs to Panama, look for other routes ", Minister Pino assured in a statement.
