Panama will ease restrictions on mobility and authorized the reopening of new economic sectors, including wholesale trade companies from 24 of August, after more than five months of being closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, announced the Minister of Health, Luis Sucre.
Sucre said that the decision to authorize the reopening of these sectors is based on technical and scientific criteria, including the decrease in the rate of effective reproduction (Rt), lower incidence of cases, increase in the doubling time of infections, and greater capacity of the hospital infrastructure.
"We have made the decision that as of Monday 24 (of August) the opening of the offices and real estate companies, promoters and appraisals nationwide ", added during a virtual press conference.
The government that develops a gradual reopening of the economy by sectors and not by blocks as it had planned at the beginning to avoid as much as possible a regrowth, It will also allow the opening of companies dedicated to the sale and wholesale trade, among these the distributors of non-food products such as clothing, textiles and cosmetics, among others.
In addition to that, it will also allow the restart of dozens of public and private construction projects in different parts of the country.
Sucre assured that after an opening in all the countries of the world "there is always some degree of regrowth", however they hope that with the planned strategies, the installed capacity and the contribution of the population help to ensure that if it occurs “it is not of a great impact that manages to cause difficulties” to the health system.
“We need all of us to comply with biosafety standards, insofar as we respect the gradualness of openness, that we are all aware that we are all affected by the pandemic ", affirmed the minister.
Starting next week, Exits restricted by ID number in the provinces of Panama and West Panama will be void, that register the highest number of infections, but will keep specific departure days for men and women, night curfew, and a total quarantine on Sunday.
Added to that, the government will allow the reopening of sports that do not require physical contact such as golf, tennis, and use of bicycles, and skates, as long as the mask and other biosafety protocols are used correctly.
Panama registered until 18 of August, 82,790 infections by coronavirus throughout the country, including 1,809 deceased, according to the Ministry of Health.
The director of the Metropolitan Health Region, Israel Cedeño said that in the last week the speed of infections has decreased, while the Rt fell to 0.99, which means that a positive COVID-19 patient can infect one person or no one.
