Panama exceeded on Sunday the 20 thousand cases of coronavirus infections throughout the country, after recording a record number of 848 new cases in 24 hours amid the increase in infected people that coincides with the opening of the first blocks of the economy.

The director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, Lourdes Moreno said that of the total accumulated cases 5,871 still active, of which 509 are hospitalized, including 97 in intensive care, Y 5,362 in home isolation and hotels.

Moreno said that the deceased went up to 429 after the death of eight patients in the last 24 hours, all had risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, and smoking.

Panama has seen a growing increase in coronavirus infections after easing the quarantine it imposed in March to try to stem the coronavirus outbreak in an attempt to revive the economy, in fact only in the first 13 days of June the country registered some 6,500 cases with daily record numbers.

The Vice Minister of Health, Luis Sucre acknowledged that when the reopening of the economic blocs began, epidemiological reports yielded a total of 200 new daily cases on average, a reality that changed in the following days.

The cases that now appear in the statistics correspond to people who “potentially” were able to catch it towards the end of the second week after the opening of the first economic block., who started the 13 of May, and the beginning of the reopening of the second block registered on 1 of June, Sucre said during the daily epidemiological report.

The new reality forced the authorities to retake restrictions on mobility in the provinces of Panama, including the capital, and Panama West, in addition to launching the search for new infections by uploading the application of diagnostic tests.

"In the last week we have been above the 1,500 daily tests, the largest in the region, this allows us to detect cases early and reduce new infections ”, Sucre stated.

Added to that, Panama tracks more than a thousand 600 people who entered the country on humanitarian flights through the App "Protect yourself with health", that allows personalized monitoring and raising the traceability of positive COVID-19 cases and their contacts throughout the country.

"This tool complements the actions that in health promotion, virus containment and mitigation are implemented in Panama ”, Sucre stated.

Panama, with 4.2 millions of inhabitants, It is the Central American country with the highest number of coronavirus infections.

Around the world are registered 7,678,125 positive cases of COVID-19, Y 426,309 deaths with a fatality rate of 5.55%.
