Researchers on psychiatric illness from the Fonda Mental Foundation revealed that people with a psychiatric disorder are more vulnerable to the effects of the coronavirus.

The study was published on 15 July by the British media The Lancet Psychiatry and reveals that tests were carried out in 22 countries and the results revealed that patients with psychiatric illnesses are twice as likely to die from Covid-19, than the rest of the population.

The specialists explained that the vulnerability of patients with a psychiatric condition is due to the fact that antidepressant or antipsychotic treatments increase the risk of mortality up to three times, because they attack different parts of the body, making them more vulnerable to disease that attack the immune system because they interfere with the biological processes of drugs they receive to treat their conditions.

Researchers ask the world's health authorities to prioritize vaccination against the coronavirus for these types of people, because public and private hospitals do not usually provide the care you need.

Fonda Mental asked for support from large pharmaceutical companies and international authorities to carry out more studies and identify how to manage and prevent coronavirus in the most vulnerable patients.
