“The image of the ice collapse gives me the feeling of a funeral” : about alpine melting

Italy – The prominence of a serac in the eastern alpine arc known as al Marmolada has drawn attention to the serious problem facing thawing in the Italian mountains as a result of climate change..

The breakaway ice block happened in the past 4 July and is equivalent to two football fields with about 60 meters thick that slid down the mountain leaving almost two dozen human victims, between them 11 dead, confirmed as of today.

Some newspapers headlined with huge photographs “the funeral of the alpine glacier”. A radio listener commented during the program regarding the alpine deglaciation “the images of the Marmolada make me feel a very sad funeral sensation.”

Science agrees with the listener. The National Research Center, by its acronym in Italian known as CNR estimates that the entire Italian glacial heritage below three thousand 500 meters will disappear in the next 25 O 30 years.

The 903 italian glaciers, of which only two are outside the alpine arc, cover an area of 368 square kilometers, a 40% less compared to 1989.

at the crash site, the decrease is 30% but this last year the situation has accelerated due to the scarce winter snow that leaves the ice banks less protected, to that we must add the high temperature well above the norm, assured Renato Colucci of the Institute of Polar Science of the CNR.

Saturday 3 from July to four thousand meters of height temperatures of zero degrees Celsius were registered and in the Marmolada 10 degrees Celsius. As a consequence, a fusion of water occurred that forced the detachment.

by Guillermo Diolaiuti, glaciologist at the University of Milan Studies, with the temperatures seen in recent weeks all the alpine glaciers are melting. But the retreat of the ice is not only due to temperatures but also to debris and pollutants from forest fires., the cities and industries that are dressing the mountains in black or gray which traps heat with sunlight.

It happens like when we dress in black in the sun, we feel more heat, if we dress in white it is cooler because the opposite effect arises, Diolaiuti exemplified.

Luca Mercalli, Climatologist says that the tragedy of the Marmolada brings us to the scene a huge problem of climate change that science has been repeating for a long time 30 years and is assumed with little awareness.

It is about individual conscience, business and state, but it seems that interests do not allow to change perspective. “There is a great indifference for the future of humanity. The war in Ukraine will put more money into the production of missiles than for the production of solar panels” lamented Mercalli.

He stated that a missile pollutes when it is fired and when it explodes, it also leaves so much material lying around that it could have been used to produce harmless or nearly harmless goods..

CO2 and its equivalents are what are generating climate risk. An Italian emits on average seven thousand kilograms of CO2, an american 18 one thousand and one african two thousand, according to climatologist.

"What do we do as an individual to reduce it?" the expert asked.. “We could blame the companies, but these place their products in big businesses and we are the ones who choose to consume” he concluded speaking to a local radio.
