The digitization of processes is urgent to strengthen world trade

The pandemic accelerated the shift towards greater digitization and made it clear that connectivity is essential for work, The education, health and trade. In this context, the Association of Companies of the Panama Pacifico Area ADEDAPP remains in constant evolution, encouraging its members to support the efforts that both the government and private companies carry out to strengthen digitization in processes.

ADEDAPP encourages the Panamanian government to continue with the modernization policy that will make the processes that will lead Panama to maintain its competitiveness at this key moment in the world more efficient and technological.

"We urge you to continue working together, State and private companies to further promote the modernization of the country's logistics institutions, which involves the digitization of all processes, something that the pandemic is accelerating and that is part of one of the pillars of the National Logistics Strategy ", Jaime Carrizo says, president of ADEDAPP.

The 2020 meant an important turn for the logistics industry and the world. The strict health controls derived from the COVID-19 pandemic and the limitations in the transport of goods, They demanded changes in the forms of work and more efficient and digitized procedures.

In Panama, logistics activity is one of the main engines of the economy, that according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, provides the 30% of the Gross Domestic Product (Schedule) from the country, therefore its sustainability is crucial to guarantee the recovery and reactivation of all activities.

During the pandemic, the Panama Pacific Special Economic Area, one of the largest industrial complexes in the national territory put its capabilities to the test, companies that understand it strengthened their measures, ensured optimal conditions for employees and complied with the protocols required by the authorities to maintain the movement of the economic gear, but they also took advantage of this contingency to modernize their activities and make them more digitized and efficient.

“We are proud as Panamanians for the contribution and sacrifice made to maintain operations at projected levels., but at the same time we are clear that we have a long way to go to match the levels of other nations in Latin America, especially in technological matters ", says the president of ADEDAPP.

Although there are institutions that have advanced and digitization in our country has improved, according to the CAF Digitization Index, we still have important challenges to overcome. This was stated by Raúl Katz, Professor at Columbia University Business School, during a meeting on digital infrastructures in Panama, organized in 2020 by the Development Bank of Latin America and the National Center for Competitiveness.

In Panama, of the 2,300 procedures carried out in public institutions, solo 129 are digitized, that is to say less than 10%, according to data from the Government Innovation Authority AIG.
