Luis Enrique and Ricardo Martinelli Linares were detained by the Guatemalan authorities at La Aurora International Airport, when they were preparing to board a plane to El Salvador and later to Panama.
The Guatemalan authorities stated that it was a private flight, where the arrest of two Panamanians with “extradition request for alleged money laundering”.
The National Civil Police (PNC) from Guatemala through his Twitter account reported that the Martinelli Linares brothers are required by the United States. After their arrest they were notified of the “provisional arrest warrant for extradition purposes”.
Jorge Aguilar, PNC spokesman said that the Martinelli brothers intended to leave that country bound for Panama in a “humanitarian flight” when they were arrested
The Martinelli are requested in Panama by the Special Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, to appear in the case of bribes delivered by the Odebrecht company in Panama and the Blue Apple case.
The 21 November 2018 were arrested in Miami, U.S, at your residence, allegedly for immigration reasons, related to your visas. They were later released after paying a release bond.
Enrique Martinelli Linares, through his lawyer Luis Eduardo Camacho González, sent the past 23 June to the Panamanian Foreign Minister Alejandro Ferrer a note requesting authorization to enter the country on a humanitarian flight.
This request was made the day after having posted the bond for $2 million and another for $5 millions, imposed in the investigations of the two cases in which they are related.
The Foreign Ministry replied that this request should be addressed to the Ministry of Health. (minsa). Once sent to the Minsa, the entity reported that the request was sent to the Foreign Ministry, to the Public Ministry and the National Immigration Service for their consideration and then proceed as established by law. The Minsa denied that same day having given authorization for the entry into the country of Enrique Martinelli Linares.
Before the arrest in Guatemala, The Martinelli family responds in a statement that they have as a priority, ensure that the two brothers receive the necessary legal advice when they are summoned by the Guatemalan judicial authorities. “We trust that the legal situation of the Martinelli brothers, in the Republic of Guatemala, be resolved as soon as possible, so that they continue the process of return to Panama, in order to attend to the processes for which they have been cited”, points the document.
